"Birch at Hart Lake" – Watercolor
Zoltan Szabo;
I chose Zoltan Szabo because his work focuses on one thing and fades out the background; to create a blurry effect. The focused object is sharper than the background. This is interesting as I could make something surreal appear in a normal image.
Form;
The artist uses darker colours for the background, Such as grey and black. This may be because he wants to convey that it is a confusing yet shadowed experience, to go to the birch at Hart Lake. The autumn orange, brown and green may indicate the path as it carries on. Orange suggests attraction and success, the green suggests growth and freshness. The brighter colours are used to create a focus on the path to the lake perhaps. Messy lines and some straight lines have been used to create a confusing effect, this may be to illustrate how you have to go through struggles in order to achieve something and become someone important. It shows that we should focus on our path to success not what is around us and what is trying to make it difficult. The surface is both white and furry and dark orange and sharp. This piece is 22cmx30cm.
Context;
This was made between the years 1949-1980, in Canada. This was not made for anyone in particular. The artist was originally from Hungary, then moved to Canada around 1949, also he later immigrated to the US in 1981. The work may infer the difficulties of the time and how the cold war was a dark shadow which could’ve ruined the lives of many in America. This can also be linked to novels such as ‘Of Mice and Men’ which was based on the struggle faced by the Americans because of the great depression. This can be related to science as at that time deforestation was one of the main focuses of the news headlines.
Content;
This is a watercolour abstract of a landscape, which looks as though the colour of life is being overshadowed by the darker sides such as depression. It is focused on one tree, in every detail, like how people with depression only focus on the bad things in life, letting it ruin the good things in life. It represents the way thoughts can overpower the happiness in a person’s mind, just like a tree shadows and blocks the sunlight. The ‘Birch’ is described as typically rather short-lived pioneer species, which also links to how thoughts can shorten your life and end up being the cause of suicide or self-harm. The title makes my point more reliable as a birch doesn’t last for long. This piece is realistic as it doesn’t exaggerate the complex of the tree; also realistic colours have been used. The theme is depression.
Process;
This was created using watercolours. The artist is a watercolour artist. The techniques of, dry brush, dipping and smudging has been used to add texture.
Mood;
This makes me feel depressed as darker colours like blacks and greys have been used to add this feeling. The rough texture is focused on and the softer ones seem to fade away, making it look as though darker thoughts make you forget the happier ones.
