"In the Situations, a girl runs through varyingly weathered landscapes donning a striking red outfit. In search of a sublime freedom, she travels to find fleeting moments of communion with nature. Draped in red, she catches the light of the sun or buries herself in the fog. As though she were attempting to rediscover this space, she roams on land-locked clouds that evaporate into the landscape upon the return of the sun as it chases away their mystery. Like a game between reality and fantasy, the clash between clairvoyance and a moment of madness, the girl is amused by her emotional confusion."
Maia Flore;
I chose Maia Flore because her work reflects how I may imagine things to be in my own mind. Her work attracts my attention as they’re all imaginative and interestingly unusual.
Form;
The artist has used the colours which indicate confusion, strength or danger. The colour grey may suggest; sadness, boring, conservative or confusion. The colour red may imply; blood, heat, desire, energy, violence or danger. The smoothness of the fog makes the image more confusing. The red jacket/coat is high in texture but has smooth sections; it stands out as it’s in the centre which makes it more visible. The positioning of the girl suggests that she is lost in confusion and the tree over her head is a metaphor which suggests that she may be over-thinking and her imagination may be wild, as to why its presented as a tree. Her ideas may be overlapping like the branches of the tree and it may be putting a lot of pressure over her. The blurry grass surface looks sharp and it may suggest the obstacles in life which hurt her and surround her. The piece is 90x70cm and is a fine art print.
Context;
This series is called; ‘Situations’. The title does not change the way I see the work as it is clear that its showing someone who is lost in confusion perhaps feeling as though she may be in danger, she may be feeling emotionally confused and angered because of what she may be thinking about. The tree is presenting her thoughts as confusing and too much to handle. This isn't realistic however it is usually realistic as it’s relatable. The tree exaggerates her mind, as it isn't linked to her and it’s oddly placed over her head as if it’s a thinking bubble. The theme of the work is imagination and confusion. It is a landscape with an abstract.
Process;
This piece was photographed then with the use of Photoshop and light, it was made realistic. Also the blur to create the fog may have been added using Photoshop effects. Maia Flore is a photographer therefore it is bound to be a photograph. The work was maybe developed when the artist felt confused emotionally during her the making of her collection; situations.
Mood;
This piece makes me feel lost. This is because the girl in the red dress is the only person in the middle of nowhere. The colour grey creates a mysterious effect which makes it more ambiguous. The smooth fog blurs thoughts and concentration which confuses the eye. It creates a dark atmosphere where you would try and relate it to a time where you yourself have felt alone and confused emotionally.
